Another January 1, another Polar Bear Plunge at Alki Beach.  This one was particularly crisp — 33 degrees outside with four inches of snow about four miles away.  45 degrees in the water — it was a quick in and out.

This morning the Jenkins fam ventured to Alki Beach for our sixth straight Polar Bear Plunge.   It was the second consecutive year the kids took the plunge and, as per usual, the morning was glorious.

Afterwards we grabbed breakfast at Christo’s on Alki, played some kush ball and finished off what always ends up a family photo shoot:

This morning the Jenkins fam joined the Swapps and 500 or so other of our closet friends in West Seattle for the Upteenth Annual Alki Polar Bear Plunge.   This was my fifth straight APBP but this one came with a few firsts.

First, Reese and Finn took their first plunges.  Finn went first with me then, after much cajoling, Charlotte and Reese joined George and me for a second dunk a few minutes after our first one.

This was also the first time I took multiple plunges.  In addition to the aforementioned two I took a third plunge around noon when I ran into Johnny Smith, little bro’ of my old friend Gary.  Johnny and I leaped off the stairs (see photos below).

I’ll say this: I hope my boat never goes down in Puget Sound.

Sandwiching this morning’s Polar Bear Plunge were what amounted to two Jenkins family photo shoots.

Now that we all have cameras, we may be the most photographed family this side of the Kardashians.

This morning, between what amounted to two Jenkins family photo shoots, I took another Polar Bear Plunge.  It was my fourth straight plunge at Alki Beach (search), my old stomping grounds.  Was a tad chillier than years’ past.  A few pics:

This morning the family and I ventured over to Alki for my third straight (2011I2012) Polar Bear Plunge.

This is an event on the rise.

In 2011 roughly fifty people took the plunge. In 2012 it was closer to 300. This year they were shooting for 1,000. Not sure if they got there but it was still a bundle of fun.

A few pics:

On Tuesday I joined Gary Smith, his mom Ann and about ten of their relatives (they have many) to celebrate Gary’s forty-third birthday at Wingdome in West Seattle:

Today the Jenkins fam made the twenty-minute treck to Alki for more celebration. The occasion this time was a bit of a joint birthday — Gary’s sisters Maggie and Paulie also have early March birthdays, so they did a group thing. This was the first time I’d seen either of them in twenty-plus years — they’re full-grown adults now with kids of their own. Ronnie joined the early March birthday crowd (hers is March 2, as is Jon bon Jovi’s). No Donny, Johnny or big Gary — hopefully I’ll catch them on the next ‘go round.

A few pics from the gathering at Pegasus and the walk on Alki after:

Lots of candles for lots of birthdays.

Paulie, Gary and Maggie -- three of the five Smith kids.

Mother and son on the latter's forty third.

The post-gathering strut on Alki beach.

Like father ...

like son (although this one appears to have gotten away).

Momma and her cubs ...

It's never easy to get them to look at the camera.
