Tonight I got up at 1:35 AM to submit my application to play the Old Course at St. Andrews in June 2012. The St. Andrews Trust began accepting applications at two AM PST: I hit the “send” button at two AM and four seconds. I must admit I haven’t been that nervous in a long while. If ever there was a time my computer was going to crash it was then. It didn’t, and the application made it through. All I can do now is wait and hope for the best.
A couple of side notes. First, note I said “I got up at 1:35 am.” I haven’t seen two AM in several years now and I couldn’t make it that long this time, either. In fact I was in bed by ten. Not getting any younger.
Second, I had Jeff Benezra submit a backup application at the same time in case mine got bounced or sent directly to the Trust’s e-mail trash. Amazingly, his e-mail got bounced back undeliverable. I’m not sure why — maybe the Trust’s inbox was flooded with e-mails from applicants all over the world and it couldn’t handle his. Had I delegated the application process to Jeff in toto rather than as a backup, we’d be solidly SOL.
As the saying goes, it’s so better to be safe than sorry.
