Jonathan Gets a New Look

July 23, 2009

Nephew Jonathan arrived Saturday night with a new look. Compare this to

this.

this.

We aren’t much for scaring the kids and neighbors unnecessarily, so Monday he got himself a haircut. Last night I threw some gel in, and now he looks like

this.

this.

Rhonda and I think it’s quite the improvement. Both Jonathan and his girlfriend, who apparently calls the shots, are thanking their lucky stars that it’ll grow back. Whatever. In the meantime, it looks like

Reese caught the bad hair bug.

The Jenkins Fam Discovers ZooTunes

July 16, 2009

Yesterday the Jenkins Fam hooked up with Team Tamir (aka the Richardsons) for a ZooTunes concert at Woodland Park. Ladysmith Black Mambazo was the band (more). Tom’s parents and sisters were there — so were Alan, Kimberly and Sophia (I think Sophia likes Finn.) Me thinks there can’t be anything much better than having a large and loving family around.

Good times (and great Ethiopian food) were had by all. Unfortunately the iPhone camera sat mostly in my pocket. My pics:

BECU ZooTunes

Apparently this ZooTunes is quite the big deal. Earlier this summer they had the B-52’s, and the Indigo Girls are supposed to be there next months. (Hot chicks, anyone? Not.) Yesterday was the first I’d heard of it.

Perhaps I need to get out more.

Benezra-Jenkins Win the Glendale Member-Guest Putting Contest

July 11, 2009

Last night Jeff Benezra and I won the Glendale Member-Guest putting contest. We qualified for the final ten after Jeff cozied a lag up to 9 1/2″ in afternoon qualifying. Once in we didn’t exactly roll it like Tiger/Phil, but we rolled it good enough and, somehow or another, ended up the last team standing. Second place went to Bacon/Carlson, the defending champs and the team that beat us on the last hole in ‘08.

The champs, the day after, in purple Tiger stripes.

The champs, the day after, in purple Tiger stripes.

I can’t say this was my biggest win of the year, or even my second or third. Winning the Betcha case has to win the gold, killing the two Kill Betcha.com Acts (1I2) in the state legislature the silver and bronze. It was pretty darn fun nonethless, and for a guy whose GHIN number is rising like the American deficit, it’s nice to win something on the green once in a while.

The irony, of course, is that I may be the worst putter in the field. Most days I return home from the course feeling like I could have putted better with a 2×4. Benezra has an $1,800 putter, but half the time he looks like he’s half drunk on his takeaway. Give us a crowd, however, and I guess we get it done.

Another Independence Day in the Books

July 5, 2009

Yesterday was another great day to celebrate America’s birthday. Like last year, we went to the Edmonds Independence Day parade with the Otterlees (nee the “Smiths”). This year we had a new addition to the Jenkins clan:

Mom and Finn.

Mom and Finn.

Unfortunately Reese is just old enough to know not to look at the camera, and Finn is just young enough not to know he’s supposed to look at the camera. It wasn’t for lack of trying, but try as we might, we couldn’t get both kids to look at the camera:

No matter the angle, one or both of them kept looking the other way.

I can assure you there was nothing going on over there.

Among the parade participants was a group of scooter riders clad in the white version of my July 4 shirt:

After the parade we had a great barbecue lunch at the Otterlee’s. Later that day I did a 1200-yard open water swim down at the LBC, where we closed the day off watching fireworks with the Cheuks.

Not a bad way to spend a life.

Reese and the American Flag Shirt, Take 3

July 5, 2009

In what’s slowly becoming a family tradition I’m sure Reese will cringe at in years to come, we took the third annual Reese and the American flag pic today:

July 4, 2009.

July 4, 2009.

The first two:

July 4, 2008.

July 4, 2008.

July 4, 2007.

July 4, 2007.

I’m not sure how this little tradition got started, but for a shirt that gets worn once a year and basically sat unused for years, this guy has staged quite a comeback.

Another Pro Tour I Won’t Be Joining

July 4, 2009

Today Joel and I joined a four of his friends for a day of surfing at LaPush, one of the northwestern most points in the union.

We surfed the star.

We surfed the star.

Surf and weather were great, but I was la pushin’ the bounds of sanity goin’ out there without a hood. Didn’t know water could get that cold. We saw a seal, a large bed of kelp, and a brave soul on a body board without a wetsuit. Me — I’d a died of hypothermia.

It was a very full day (left at 4:45 am, home at 10:30 pm) but one I’d definitely like to do again, although truth be told . . .

no one'll ever confuse me with this guy.

Reese Picks Up the Sticks

July 3, 2009

Ok, she may not be this guy yet . . .

Tiger Woods as child

but Reese’s golf career has officially begun:

Dig that clubhead speed.

Shaft may be a tad long and the alignment a bit off, but she'll get it.

The Jenkins Clan Hits Remlinger Farms

July 2, 2009

The Jenkins Four went to Remlinger Farms today for some raspberry picking. We did not get cheated.

Reese with Dad 2

I’ve posted pics on Snapfish. Nothing particularly fantastic as they were all iPhone pics (I’m no Chase Jarvis).
